house of oranje
on account of the gorgeous dutch taking apart the dastardly italians yesterday, i might as well talk about some footie. ive often referenced how soccer explains the world as a great entry book to my views on the sport, but the much more appropriate, and better, book is brilliant orange (this blog entry sums up the design and football aspects of the book well, along with adding other great stuff). after visiting the country and reading the book, its hard not be a fan and be obsessed with the dutch. their style is gorgeous, their culture is interesting, and their people hilarious. the videos of them dominating the stadium and invading germany are great, and even spurred the italian manager to mention their effect:
“I think the Netherlands team are helped by the fans all dressing in orange – you really notice them. Aesthetically, it is beautiful.”
the atmosphere at either the world cup or the euro cup sound great, especially when the dutch art involved. eventually ill have to move there. though ill be woefully inadequate to the 6’5” blonde standard.
in other footie news, the take it to the next level commercial by guy ritche for nike is great (the ad company hosts it under work for nike football), and this video of empty stadium/linesman hijinks is hilarious.
